Michael Sullivan

Michael J. Sullivan is an Associate professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at Baylor University in Production Design/Scenic Design. He previously served on the faculty of the University of North Texas Theatre and Dance and the University of Oklahoma School of Drama. Professor Sullivan is an active professional Production Designer and has worked extensively with a variety of production companies, such as the WaterTower Theatre, Kitchen Dog Theatre, Stage West, Circle Theatre, The Huntington Theatre, The Adirondack Theatre Festival, Pollard Theatre and Shakespeare Dallas.

In 2005 Professor Sullivan received a Leon Rabin Award — for best set design — for the musical Cabaret at the WaterTower Theatre.

In university settings he has designed for the University of North Texas Opera, the University of Oklahoma School of Dance, School of Drama, and School of Musical Theatre.

Michael's mentor was the fabled Broadway designer William Eckart. Assisting him on several productions including Cowardy Custard, South Pacific, Funny Girl and the world premiere of Three Coins in the Fountain at the Saint Louis Municipal Opera, The Muny. In recent years he has designed The Merry Wives of Windsor, the world premiere of QuixoteThe Tempest, Hamlet, and the Festival Stage for entire summer seasons at Shakespeare Dallas and Ada and the Engine at Stage West.

Michael's play and puppet driven creation Leonardo and the Flying Machine has appeared twice in central Texas with The Young Festival Stage, a young audience's program he started in 2022, where the musicals James and the Giant Peach and Androcles and the Lion have also been produced.
