Theatre History, Literature & Theory
Theatre Arts
Skye Strauss is a recent graduate of the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Theatre and Drama program at Northwestern University who is excited to be part of Baylor Theatre this year as a visiting lecturer. Her scholarship on puppetry, scenography, and devising is intimately tied to her artistic practice as a puppeteer and a costumer. Her teaching background includes research and writing skills for play and performance analysis, introduction to theatre, and the history and theory of theatre, with a “special topics” focus on puppetry, collective creation, and theatrical design. She loves to combine theory and practice in the classroom – making space for the creative work of making and writing to co-exist.
Her writing has been featured in Theatre Design & Technology, from which she recently received the Herbert D. Greggs Merit Award for her article "The Workings of A Wild Mind," and the book Theatre Artisans and Their Craft from Focal Press. She spoke at the Volkenberg Puppetry Symposium at the 2022 Chicago International Puppet Theatre Festival, for which she also wrote forthcoming reviews for PAJ and HowlRound. She has presented her work in multiple focus groups at Association for Theatre in Higher Education and in the Puppetry and Material Performance working group at the American Society for Theatre Research.
